Wolf Creek and the Grave Creek Hills

Wolf Creek and the Grave Creek Hills

In 1855 Capt. Andrew Jackson Smith led a force of Army regulars and local militia against the Takelma, who they believed were holed up in the Grave Creek Hills. Smith sent one column down Wolf Creek and another down Grave Creek in an attempt to surround a smaller force of natives. But when the two columns converged in the morning, they found the enemy had eluded them. By the time they eventually engaged the Takelma, it was from a poor tactical position and they suffered many casualties.
