A few run-down relics still stand along the main street in this former lumber company town, which also became an important stage and rail head, serving the Burnt River Valley communities to the east. Whitney gained in prominence when the Sumpter Valley Railway reached here in 1901, growing to 150 residents, but the town folded up when the railway was abandoned in 1947.
