Aunt Alice’s Washers, Godon Homestead
Alice and Jo never married and, with their mother Bridget, carried on running the ranching operation on their own, even after Bridget died at age 93 in 1967. Jo was the cattleman of the duo, tending to the herd, while Alice was the mechanic and handywoman. The shed on the property still contains a clutter of tools, saved scraps of metal and other collections, like this array of washers, all “arranged” so that only Alice could find things. Alice died in 1980, and Jo followed several years later. The ranch then gradually fell into disuse before being rescued by the Ferns, who are preserving the site and have donated several items off the ranch to the Fort Rock Valley Homestead Village Museum.
