In Raymond Hatton’s 1982 book, “Pioneer Homesteaders,” Pierre’s daughter Lou recalled the building of the barn: “I was the ‘boy’ of the family and was Dad’s right-hand man. I was expected to do much of the hard work, including sawing down big trees for the barn roof supports. . . . Dad had never done any work like that before. He didn’t know anything about building, but, by gosh, he did a good job.”
