'All Along the Coast Was Nothing But a Blaze'

Capt. William Tichenor described the scene along the south coast as he sailed from Port Orford to tell soldiers at Crescent City about the 1856 Washington's Birthday uprising: “All along the coast was nothing but a blaze; wherever there was a hut it was in flames or in smouldering (sic) ruins.”
