Ambush at Pistol River

Ambush at Pistol River

On March 18, 1856, a party of volunteers from Crescent City was marching north up the coast to rescue the besieged Fort Miner when they were ambushed in the dunes by natives at Pistol River. After a day-long fire-fight in which one of their men was killed, they were themselves rescued by Army troops who were coming up behind them on the same mission.
