Madrone Over Skookumhouse Canyon

Madrone Over Skookumhouse Canyon

Native Americans living along the lower Rogue built a fortification they called Skookum House at this canyon that runs below a 2,200-foot butte about 15 miles up the Rogue River from its mouth. Skookum was Chinook jargon for “strong.” Today, both the butte and canyon carry the name.
