Bybee Crossing on the Rogue

Bybee Crossing on the Rogue

An abandoned cabin near the ferry crossing here was used by Gen. Joseph Lane as his headquarters during the 1853 treaty negotiations with local Rogue bands, who had been skirmishing with settlers and miners over the summer. While encamped here, Gen. Lane was interviewed by a newspaper correspondent for the Oregon Statesman, who wrote a colorful profile that helped bolster Lane's reputation as "the hero who never surrenders."
